SEO Glossary: Essential Terms You Need to Know

Like any other field, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) also has its own abbreviations, definitions, and terminology which are simple to understand and remember.

Here’s the compiled form of SEO Glossary which you need to understand while making your career in this field.

Alt Attribute

As Google is not able to understand the images, so the Alt attribute is offered for the crawlers to understand what the image is about. Another name is Alt Text.

Analytics

The Google Analytics tool provided by Google to track the visitor’s or customers’ behavior in order to serve them in a better way.

Anchor Text

A word or a group words is linked to another website describing the nature of website to the users and crawlers.

Backlinks

Another name – inbound links. These are the links coming to our website from other sites.

Black Hat

The technique used for SEO rankings. This is the way which is against the Google’s guidelines and is not preferred to adapt.

Bounce Rate

In the eyes of Google, it is not the direct ranking factor. Bounce Rate means the percentage of visitors leaving the website without stepping on to the any other page.

Bot

The spiders that crawl the website or internet to find the unique and informative content to serve users.

Breadcrumb

Navigational element that helps to reveals the pages and helps the users to figure out where they are on the website.

Broken Links

These are the pages that shows 404 Not Found. These pages are either removed or changed destination URL without implementing redirect.

Canonical URL

This is implemented to avoid duplicate content of a website. An HTML code helps to redirect multiple URL’s to one preferred URL.

Cloaking

It is the violation of Google’s guidelines by creating different contents for users and crawlers.

Crawling

Gathering information from millions of website over the internet with the help of bots and compiling them in index of search engine.

Crawler

Crawlers are bots or spiders that go through the website or webpages over the internet.

Crawl Errors

It means crawlers are unable to analyse the webpage.

Dead-End Page

A page that doesn’t consist of any other page link which blocks the user or crawler to move further.

Deep Link

There are 2 ways to describe deep links: Either a link pointing inside the website or a link pointing to some content inside a mobile app.

De-index

Removing a site or a page from Google’s index permanently or temporarily.

Disavow

Unwanted links over which we have no control but suggest the Google to ignore those links by Google’s Disavow tool.

Do-follow

Links that don’t contain rel=”nofollow” and allows the website to pass the authority to other website.

Domain Authority

The overall score given to a domain based on many parameters which helps to rank a new page very quickly.

Editorial Link

Another name – Natural Link, which is given by a website without paying or asking for it.

External Link

Another name- Outbound Link, which is going out from your website to other websites.

Featured Snippet

Google shows a special type of results for question related queries just above the organic results.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console tool offered by Google to monitor site indexing and speed errors. It helps to improve the website from crawlers’ viewpoint.

Guest Blogging

A common link building practice to write content for other websites and get a link to our website.

Hidden Text

Any unseen content used to manipulate rankings. It can be done either too small font size or by hiding text using CSS or colour of text is the same as of background.

Index

Database used by search engines to store or retrieve information

Indexability

Process of understanding and adding a page to the database by a bot.

Keyword

A phrase or a word used by SEO professionals to deliver information to the audience and to get the rankings of the businesses.

Keyword Cannibalization

It is the competition between the same pages of a website on the same keyword. It results in lower conversion rates, authority deduction, and many more negative points.

Keyword Density

Frequency of using keywords in a content. Synonyms or related terms can be used.

Keyword Stuffing

Using high frequency of keywords or adding irrelevant keywords into the content to increase ranking is keyword stuffing which is a spam tactic.

Knowledge Graph

Details of a search term appears above the organic results.

Knowledge Panel

Details of a famous personality or business or anything appears right side in a box.

KPI

Key Performance Indicator that helps to measure whether the objectives or goals of a business are being reached or not.

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)

It was the technique used to discover a relation between terms and concepts by Google. 

Long-Tail Keyword

Very specific phrases or group of words having higher purchase intent.

Negative SEO

Spammy practices that are used to harm others website rankings.

No-follow Link

Hyperlink that instructs the bots not to go to the linking page. It includes rel=”nofollow” in the code that suggests not to pass the authority to the next website.

Noindex Tag

This tag instructs the crawlers not to index a specific page.

Orphan Page

An independent page which is linked nowhere in the website.

Reciprocal Links

When links are exchanged between two websites.

Redirect

Sharing any other page with the user instead of required one. 301 is permanent redirect and 302 is temporary redirect.

Maintaining a positive presence of a person or a brand on the internet via social media or search results by dropping the negative results.

Rich Snippet

Code added to HTML of the site in order to provide enhanced listing of the information required.

Robots.txt

A file that suggests bots what to be ignored from the website.

Sitemap

It is a roadmap of the website which helps users and bots to understand the website. HTML sitemaps are for users and XML sitemaps are for the crawlers.

Split Testing

Another name – A/B Testing, used for comparing either web pages or ad copies.
